Savannah

Foaled in 1997 (approx.)
15.1 hand Palomino Mare

This is Savannah. This relatively young mare has a popped left knee and a lot of pain in her right hip, but at the present time (Nov 07) is suffering more from grief. Her owner of many years died, and it was a couple of days before she was found. Savannah had stood alone, hungry and thirsty, in all likelihood aware that her only friend had died, for two days. She was moved to a temporary home for a few days; to a second holding home for another night, and then here to TGC. Her hip has been adjusted and at present she is on pain medication while it heals; she's had a little time to adjust to the routine, but she is still distant and unwilling to be touched. She has good training, she doesn't fight. She just doesn't, at this time, care.

These three photos (two to the left) were taken in early 2008. Savannah still stands alone. Ronan took an interest in her during her spring 'heat', but she hasn't made any friends, and is still distant from people. Below, you can see KC Bradley making overtures, and Savannah rejecting them. Her weight is good; her feet are 100% better; her hip seems to be improved. But her heart is still walled off. I am going to start working her - maybe concentrated attention will break through...

I've seen a lot of expressions on the faces of horses who come to TGC - confusion, delight, calm acceptance. I don't often see grief like this. I hope we can help her overcome her pain.
This is Savannah a day or so after her previous owner's death. Even here, she turns away from people.

Below we have Steve Silkotch putting the wierdest set of hind shoes on that I have ever seen, in an effort to change the shape and angles of her back feet. After who knows how long trying not to use her right hind, both of her hind feet are deformed. You can see she stands patiently for Steve. Laurie Henkel adjusted her hip, and we'll see how well this works as time goes by. Both Steve and Laurie suggest waiting for true results until after the next shoeing.

As of late December 2007, although she still seems distant to me, she is more cooperative with Mike and allowed Jane, one of her sponsors, to walk right up to her for a little petting. She's getting better...

At this time Savannah is half-sponsored by Jane Crase. Thank you Jane! Please contact Casey if you would be interested in sponsoring any of the un-sponsored horses at The Golden Carrot.
